Serious about ESG

The heart of our operations

As the largest premium end-to-end drinks specialist in the UK, Majestic Wine Group takes our Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) responsibilities seriously, putting them at the heart of our operations. We have a moral imperative to do the right thing and recognise the important role we play in leading the market when it comes to protecting the environment, supporting our people, and contributing positively to the communities we serve.

We believe that, as a Group operating across the retail, wholesale and hospitality sectors, we are in a unique position in the industry to lead the conversation and engage, empower and inspire our colleagues, producers and customers on their sustainability journeys.

Sustainability is a strategic initiative for all of our operating companies, and we are now thinking carefully about how the strength of our Group can allow us to accelerate our journey. We’re developing a sustainability framework which will help us map out our priorities for the next five years, with clear actions and outcomes that we can track and report on an annual basis.

These priorities will be broadly focused on the following key areas:

Climate and emissions
Packaging and waste
Ethical labour practices
Responsible sourcing

Going forward, the Majestic Wine Group will publish our goals, report on our progress and achievements, and acknowledge any challenges we face in each of these four areas.

Sustainability at Majestic

CO₂ emissions

At Majestic, we are committed to cutting air pollution and CO₂ emissions and have introduced hybrid options alongside a CO₂ cap of 129g/km for our company cars. We have replaced many of our diesel delivery vans with electric vehicles, and all future additions to our van fleet will be EVs by 2030 – five years ahead of the Government's target.

We offer free electric charging points for colleagues at our Watford support centre, and also install these at our new stores where possible. Our aim is to install electric charging points at all of our stores by 2030.

All new stores Majestic has opened since 2020 utilise energy-efficient LED lighting. We continue to replace halogen lights with LEDs as part of our ongoing investments in upgrading the older stores in our portfolio.

Majestic only purchases renewable energy backed by Renewable Electricity Guarantees of Origin (REGO) to power our business. In 2023/24, 100% of our electricity use was REGO backed (zero emission) electricity, equating to 7,043,622 kWh.

Recycling

In 2021, Majestic was proud to launch the UK's first national cork recycling scheme. Partnering with The Eden Project, we turn used corks into pulp to enrich soils and protect the roots of plants and trees. Since its inception, we have donated more than 3 million corks.

We also recycle all pallets across our transport and supply chain network, as well as all of the shrink wrap used to keep pallets secure. Our store teams re-use cardboard boxes to pack orders placed by their customers both in-store and online. We also divert 100% of our recyclable waste and 90% of our general waste away from landfill.

Sustainability at Enotria

Enotria's Sustainability Charter

Launched in 2022, Enotria’s Sustainability Charter focuses on three core pillars: environmental, social, and community responsibility. We’ve already achieved year-on-year reductions in carbon emissions and support charitable causes like the Drinks Trust and Room to Reward. We invest in staff development through training programs such as WSET and Mental Health First Aid and promote diversity, inclusion, and ethical business practices.

Looking ahead, our goals include reaching carbon neutrality in our operations by 2030 and across our entire supply chain by 2050.

Collaborating for progress

We actively participate in industry initiatives such as the Sustainable Wine Roundtable (SWR), where we help set global sustainability standards.

We’ve developed a focused plan to reduce our environmental impact and lead meaningful change across the drinks industry, from lowering the carbon footprint of our packaging to decarbonising our transport operations. Our strategy includes reducing glass bottle weight, increasing recycled content, phasing out single-use plastics, and adopting lower-emission logistics solutions. We're also investing in science-based tools to measure and reduce emissions across our value chain.

We’re proud to work in collaboration with our suppliers and partners to create a more sustainable future – delivering both environmental progress and long-term value.
